“Guys.” Izzie said, her eyes springing up from the mobile device. Her eyes were wide with disbelief, her hand was trembling, the cell phone shaking ever so slightly.

“What is it?” her friends asked in unison. Izzie opened her mouth to speak, only to find barely a sound would escape.

Izzie quickened her pace, she fought against the elements, it was raining ever so slightly and there was a slight wind, the cold wetness smacked her in the face, her carefully straightened hair now whipping around in the gust. She could feel the damp seeping into her jeans, grateful for her knee high boots preventing further damp discomfort. She held her coat tightly against her neck, her eyes squinting. She was late. The blonde had been held up at the hospital, she had agreed to start earlier in order to take the afternoon as personal time. A five AM start was not ideal, but was grateful for the time off in order to meet Addison at the airport.  Having barely slept the previous night, Izzie felt completely drained, the rings under her eyes evidence of the hardship she had endured.

Rushing through the automatic doors she quickly scanned her immediate surroundings, there were people and travel cases everywhere, her concentration had her frowning, the lines on her forehead emphasising the need for sleep. It was as if she was frozen in motion, the world was carrying on around her as she stood motionless. Her senses blended, the sound drowned out by her concentration, she was unable to feel the coldness of her face, it had become numb from the elements and her toes refused to move. Ever so slowly she turned her head, her expression softened, the sound of the chaos penetrated her brain once again and her feet began moving at pace, before she was able to say a word Addison’s arms were wrapped tightly around her waist, she gave her girlfriend a quick kiss on the lips before resting her head on the older woman’s shoulder.

“Hey.” Addison cooed, rubbing her hand up and down Izzie’s back. She felt the younger woman shudder in her arms as she let out a sob. “Oh Iz, it’s going to be ok.” She promised.

One day, 20 hours and 30 minutes earlier . . .

“Dude, what is it?” Alex asked worriedly.

“Izzie, come on, whatever it is you can tell us, we’re your bro’s.” Cristina said affectionately. It was true, if Alex and Cristina were to be described as anything to Izzie it would be ‘bro’s’ they had that beer swigging, back slapping kind of relationship and it suited them all just fine. If she needed to talk to anyone about anything sensitive or emotional, she would turn to Meredith or George. Now she found herself in a situation where she just could not formulate any words.

“I got a message in my inbox.”

“Ok, that’s a start.” Cristina encouraged in her own unique way.

“Who was it from Iz?” Alex asked. Izzie looked at him, although a more accurate description would be ‘through’ him, she wasn’t looking him in the eye, it was as if she was focusing on an object that was blocked by his body.

“An old friend of my Mom’s.” She said with little emotion. Cristina and Alex glanced at one another before settling their gaze back upon the blonde.

“Is it about your Mom?” Cristina asked. Izzie nodded her head slowly in confirmation.

“What is Iz? You can tell us.” Alex placed a comforting hand over Izzie’s, it was then the blonde snapped out of her reverie, she looked Alex in the eye, glanced down at their hands and frowned before slipping it out of his grip.

“She’s in hospital, she was in an accident.”

“Is she going to be ok?” Cristina asked quickly, uncharacteristically neglecting the details.

“I don’t know.” Izzie shrugged.

“What happened?” Alex asked. Izzie took a deep breath before continuing.

“She was crossing the road and didn’t see the car coming. Ironic really, given her psychic obsession.” Izzie snorted a little. “They didn’t have my number. I forgot to tell my Mom my new number, I’m a terrible daughter.”

“She knows you work here thought right?” Alex asked.

“Sure, but she’s been unconscious since the accident, I don’t know the details ok, all I know is my mother has been hit by a car and I found out on Facebook, on my cell phone.” Izzie said solemnly.

“You have to go. You need to go and see her.” Cristina urged.

“I’ll call. I’ll call the hospital and see how she’s doing, if I need to go, I’ll go.” Izzie said defiantly. She picked up her belongings and stood from the table. “I’ll catch you guys later.”

“Tell us when you know more.” Alex said.

“We’re here for you you know?” Cristina offered, rubbing the blonde’s arm.

“Sure.” Izzie managed a small smile and walked away from her friends.

Present day . . .

Addison made herself comfortable in the passenger seat and looked over towards the driver. Her heart broke a little at the sight of the blonde so vulnerable and hurting. Izzie turned her head upon feeling the redhead’s gaze upon her and smiled sadly.

“I’m sorry.” Izzie said. Her hand poised on the key in the ignition, her shoulders hunched forward. Addison reached forward, her hand resting on Izzie’s shoulder, her blue eyes questioning and concerned. Izzie sat back in her seat and looked at her girlfriend.

“What are you sorry for?” the redhead asked.

“For all this, for dragging you into this.” Izzie said waving her hand about.

“Hey.” Addison said assertively, “Do not be sorry. I’m with you Izzie, we’re in a relationship and I’ll help you get through this. Ok?” Izzie smiled a little, despite the situation, she was insanely happy that Addison was willing to take on her mother with her.

“When she wakes up I’m going to tell her about us.” Izzie explained, her eyes drifting down to her lap.

“She will want to know who I am and why I’m sitting by her bed with your hand in mine anyway.” The redhead smiled. Izzie followed suit and leaned in for a sweet, tender kiss.

One day, 18 hours and 15 minutes earlier . . .

“She’s in surgery.” Izzie stated as she shed the white lab coat from her shoulders.

“What are her injuries?” Cristina asked.

“Broken fib and tib, broken ribs, pneumothorax, ruptured spleen, concussion. She’s alive.”

“You’re going to see her?”

“Yeah, and I’m going to get her transferred as soon as she’s stable.” Izzie said.

“You think that’s a good idea?” Cristina asked.

“Yes. I live here, I work here, if she’s here I can make sure she receives the best care. Besides, Addison’s flying in for the weekend. But I think I’ll call her, tell her it’s not a good time.” Izzie pondered aloud.

“Don’t do that.” Cristina blurted.

“Why? She doesn’t need all this shit Cristina. It’s my business, I’ll deal with it.” The blonde snapped.

“You can’t deal with it on your own. Despite what you think, you need Addison and she’ll want to be here for you.”

“We barely know each other, why would she want to come all this way to deal with my sick mother? Who I haven’t seen in years and barely spoken to.” It was clear to Cristina that Izzie was feeling a great amount of guilt and was taking it hard.

“Izzie.” Cristina took a hold of the blonde’s shoulders and forced her to look into her brown eyes. “Pull your head out of your ass and listen to what I’m saying.” She knew Izzie and the stubbornness the blonde harboured. “You told me yourself you could easily fall for Addison. I’ve seen the way you look at her, the way you are when she’s around and the way she is with you? I’ve never seen her smile like that. And I’ve seen you when you when she’s not around, you’re a miserable mess and to be honest? It’s kinda gross. You need her here, let her be your girlfriend.” A tear escaped Izzie’s eye and was travelling slowly down her cheek. She knew Cristina was right, but it was so much for her brain to process right now. She should be grateful that Addison would be willing to take some of the load off of Izzie, but at the same time, it was a huge burden for her so early on in their relationship. “You haven’t told her yet have you?” Yang guessed. Izzie shook her head, indicating that no, she hadn’t yet contacted Addison. “I think you should.” The blonde in turn nodded her affirmation.

Present day . . .

“Addison, this is my mother.” Izzie held out her free hand, hovering it over the woman in the bed. The redhead moved closer to Izzie, her hand squeezing the one that was clamped around her own.

“She looks so fragile.” Addison said sadly.

“So would anyone who’d just been hit by a car.” The blonde attempted to joke, only neither woman found the impetuous to even smirk. “She’s stable, it was touch and go for a while.”

“I can’t imagine what you must have been going through. Though looking at you, I don’t think you’ve had much sleep.” Addison said, raising her hand and stroking the blonde’s cheek affectionately.

“I haven’t. I was here all night and then I had a shift at 5.”

“You worked?” Addison asked surprised.

“It’s why I had her moved. I need to work Addie, I’d go insane if I didn’t.”

“You didn’t have to come and pick me up, I could have got a cab.” Addison offered, understanding just how much Izzie had on her plate right now.

“I wanted to see you, I needed to get out of here.” She said. She rested her head on Addison’s shoulder and yawned. “Derek said there is no immediate signs of brain damage.”

“That’s good.” Addison said, her arm snaking around Izzie’s waist.

“Yeah.” The blonde agreed. “She’s been through enough already.”

“So have you.” The redhead replied. “Sit.” She ordered and guided Izzie into the chair beside the bed. She walked to the end of the bed and picked up the chart, taking her glasses from her pocket and resting them on her nose. Izzie smiled as she kicked off her boots and placed a foot on the edge of the bed in front of her, an elbow rested on one of the arms of the chair and she proceeded to place her head on her hand, all the while, her eyes never leaving her girlfriend. It warmed her heart that the doctor in Addison was always there and whilst she was here as Izzie’s girlfriend, she wanted to make sure Izzie’s mother was receiving the best care. Addison was concentrated on the document before her, occasionally she nodded and flipped over the page. Izzie continued to watch bemused. Addison lifted her head and looked directly at the blonde, frowning at the look she was receiving from the resident.

“What?” Addison asked.

“Nothing. You’re amazing.” Izzie said with a slight blush.

“Oh no, I’m just . . . interested.” Addison explained. Izzie shrugged. Addison replaced the chart and walked round to Izzie, “You took your boots off.”

“Yeah?” Izzie replied, wondering why Addison would make such a random statement. The redhead leaned in closer and whispered into Izzie’s ear.

“You look hot in those boots.” Izzie shivered as Addison’s hot breath caressed her ear. She smiled as she replied.

“Why did you whisper that?” she said quietly. Addison nodded her head towards the woman in the bed. The blonde’s smile grew wider and she pulled Addison down, placing a chaste kiss on her lips.

“Ahem.” There was a clearing of a throat behind them, the door to the private room closed with a click and both red faced women turned to find a very stern Miranda Bailey standing with her hands on her hips.

“Well you’re just full of surprises Stevens, first I meet your mother, then I’m greeted by this. Karev will be so disappointed I asked him to fetch me a coffee.” Bailey stated. “Hello Dr Montgomery.”

“Dr Bailey.” Addison stated as she straightened and adjusted her button down shirt. She glanced back down at Izzie who had a smirk plastered across her face. The redhead raised an eyebrow at the blonde’s obvious blazé attitude.

“Your mother is showing signs of improvement Stevens, I expect she’ll be awake within the next 36 hours.” Bailey offered. “You can relax now Stevens, the worst is over. She’s recovering well from surgery and her injuries should not cause any further complications.”

“Thank you Dr Bailey.” Izzie stated with a relieved sigh, she had an inkling this may be the case, but wanted to hear it from her former mentor.

“You’re welcome. Take it easy. And look after her Addison, Stevens’ has had a rough ride.”

“I will.” Addison said, smiling widely at her girlfriend. Miranda Bailey exited the room as quietly as she had entered, leaving the two women alone with the sleeping patient.

“My Mom’s friend will be here soon.” Izzie stated upon glancing at the clock on the wall.

“Great.” Addison said quietly, “Because I am very hungry and I’ve been given orders to take care of you.” Izzie’s eyes grew wide, much to Addison’s amusement, “Get your head out the gutter Stevens. I’m thinking fine dining and a much deserved nap.” Izzie smiled as realisation dawned on her.

“That sounds perfect.” Izzie stated. “I can’t tell you how relieved I am she’s going to be ok. There is so much I need to say to her.” She finished.

“And you will.” Addison said. Izzie stood and walked into Addison’s open arms.

“Thank you.” Izzie stated. “I’m glad you’re here.”

“I wouldn’t be anywhere else.”

Thanks for the quick update. I think I might have damaged my dogs' hearing with my reaction to the previous chapter's cliffy. I really like how supportive Addie is with Izzie. I like their interaction and the fact that they are working through the long distance bit without being impulsive. Definitely like how Cristina seems to ground Izzie a bit and be the voice of reason.

Thanks for writing and sharing :-) Can't wait for the next update.
