Izzie Stevens was never usually one for attachments, she had seen enough in her life and had as many people come and go to know not to become too attached to anyone in particular. Sure, she had made some great friends here at Seattle Grace, some she saw could quite easily be here forever, others would leave as quickly as they had appeared. But her true friends, she knew would always be there, whether they were half way across the country or not.  Izzie Stevens has usually kept her distance from those of authority. Sure they bared some sort of importance in her life, teachers, professors, attendings, but they were there to help her improve her knowledge and skills and she knew very well she was one of many, so forming an attachment there would be inappropriate and somewhat embarrassing. Or so she thought. She had gone a good twenty five years give or take living by this rule. She was tough and she was proud, a very independent individual, she had had to be with her upbringing. She was a soldier, she battled on no matter what life threw at her, so when she found herself in this situation, it was fresh territory, she had not experienced such feelings before for a person she had admired so much and previously, purposely distanced herself from. But now she was gone, only yet she was back. Being so far away yet in personal contact was making her feel things she hadn’t before.  The blonde resident did not know what was happening inside her own head, why she was behaving the way she was and it scared and excited her all at once.

The young doctor was sat in the cafeteria, coffee in hand, staring mindlessly at the screen before her. It was late, she had tended to an emergency and was now waiting for Meredith to finish up. Now seemed like the perfect time to whip out her laptop and see if a certain somebody was online.  She hit the chat icon at the bottom of the page, quickly scanning the names and mini profile pictures.  There it was. Addison Montgomery. Half moon. ‘Hmmm’ Izzie murmured aloud. Her profile had gone dormant, not a complete disaster, it meant she hadn’t logged off yet. ‘Do I say hello?’ the blonde thought.  The frown on her face indicated she was deep in thought, running through all sorts of scenarios in her head. ‘Fuck it.’ She thought.

Izzie:

Hey

The cursor blinked at her waiting for the indication that Addison was replying to her message.  Five minutes passed, still nothing.  Izzie minimised the small window and decided to do a little bit of online window shopping and proceeded to open a new tab, in the small hope a message would flash at her. Ten minutes and $150 later, the resident glanced at her watch, despite the time appearing at the bottom of her screen, there was nothing that could beat the old analogue watch attached to her wrist.  She yawned as the minute hand moved over the hour hand at 12am. It had been a long day and tomorrow was promising to be much the same. ‘Come on Mer’ she muttered, taking in the dregs of her now tepid coffee. She screwed up her face at her distaste and placed the cup back on the table. In her peripheral vision she could see something flashing on the screen. Looking up, she suppressed an excited giggle, instead opting for a more reserved smile. With anticipation, Izzie opened the tab and looked at the chat window. There it was.

Addison:

Hey Izzie, sorry I was just taking a shower

‘A shower’ Izzie thought. Her mind involuntarily began to wonder, she pictured the hot spray cascading down over a very naked Addison Montgomery. Upon hearing a chair scrape along the floor she whipped her head around, a small blush creeping across her features. She had to answer Addison, who could quite possibly be sitting the other end in nothing but a towel. Izzie rolled her eyes at her own perverted thoughts and placed her fingers over the keys ready to type. ‘What do I type?’ she thought, suddenly her mind had gone blank.

Izzie:

It’s ok, I’m just waiting for Meredith to finish so we can get out of here

Addison:

You’re still at work?

Izzie:

Yeah, building collapsed down town, nasty.

Addison:

Are you ok?

Izzie:

I’m fine, just tired.

The blonde affirmed with an almighty yawn.

Addison:

Make sure you get plenty of rest, accidents like that can be mentally draining.

Izzie:

Thanks, I will.

How was your day?

Addison:

Quiet, if not a little dull, I can’t say I get the same excitement as I used to.

Izzie:

Are we still talking about work? ;)

Addison:

Ha, I was, but now you come to mention it . . .

Izzie:

Do you miss it?

Addison:

I miss some of the people, I can’t say I miss Seattle or the endless surgeries. I like variety.

Izzie:

I can empathise with that

Addison:

Sure you can, you used to model underwear!

Izzie:

How did you know about that?

Addison:

Nothing stays quiet in that place, in fact I think I still have a copy

Izzie’s eyes pinged open, as wide as it was possible for them to go without her eyeballs disengaging.

Addison:

I think I should follow that up with an explanation . . .

Izzie:

Do tell!

Addison:

I confiscated it from some interns, guess I never thought about throwing it out

Izzie:

Ok, so you are in possession of photos of me semi naked, I’m finding that a little hard to take in lol

Addison:

It has some nice underwear in there ;-)

Izzie:

Seriously?

Addison:

*sigh* ok, confession time, I like your pictures

‘WOAH’ Izzie’s brain was on overload, did Addison really just type that? Seriously? Maybe she did and maybe she typed it because they were over a thousand miles apart and didn’t think anything would come of it. But how could she type that and not expect a reaction?

Izzie:

Erm, thanks? I don’t know how to take that.

Honesty was the best policy Izzie decided.

Addison:

Well it’s definitely a compliment.

Izzie:

Thank you. I wasn’t expecting you to say anything like that.

Addison:

I can appreciate beauty when I see it Izzie.

Izzie:

Ok, you need to stop with the compliments!

Addison:

I’m sorry am I making you uncomfortable?

‘Not in the way you think.’ Izzie sighed.

Izzie:

No I guess, I don’t know, you’ve kind of rendered me speechless.

Addison:

I hope not, I really like talking with you

Izzie:

Me too, I never expected we would though

Addison:

Why not?

Izzie:

You were always my boss

Addison:

I’m not anymore

Izzie:

I know, but you’re like, so far away, it’s a bit strange, it’s like I just met you and am getting to know you as someone else, not Dr Montgomery

Addison:

That’s not a bad thing

Izzie:

It’s not

Addison:

Ok, so is there anything you want to know that you wouldn’t have asked before?

The blonde pondered for a moment, apart from the most glaringly obvious question of her sexuality, which would be rude to ask at this stage, besides, she had been married and dated Mark Sloane. Maybe she was just complimenting Izzie’s assets and it wasn’t an attempt at flirtation.

Izzie:

What’s your favorite thing to do to relax?

Addison:

That’s a good question, anything that allows me to escape reality, books, movies, music, right now I love going to the beach with my book or my ipod and just be. I love watching the ocean too.

Izzie:

That sounds perfect.

Addison:

It almost is

Izzie:

Only almost?

Addison:

I have no one to share it with

Izzie frowned, her heart broke a little upon hearing those words echoing in her own head, she could hear Addison’s voice saying them as clear as day, it may have been months since she last saw her, but she would never forget that voice.

Izzie:

I’m sorry Addison, I didn’t mean to upset you

Addison:

Don’t apologise Stevens, I’m lucky to have what I’ve got

Izzie:

I guess that’s true. I know what you mean though, sometimes you do something and you turn around and there’s no one there to share it with.

Addison:

Sounds like we both could use a little company.

Izzie:

Speaking of company Meredith’s coming, I have to go but I’ll speak to you soon?

Addison:

Sure, I’d like that. Don’t work too hard and take care of yourself Stevens x

Izzie:

You too Addison x

The blonde sighed as she logged off and hastily closed the lid to her laptop. She hurried it into her bag and stood to meet Meredith as she approached.

“What are you upto?” Meredith asked suspiciously through narrow eyes.

“Nothing, I’m not doing anything, I just spoke to Addison again on Facebook.” Izzie rushed out.

“Huh. I see, this is becoming a bit of a habit.”

“She’s so awesome, I never thought she would give me the time of day, but here she is chatting to me out of work hours.”

“Technically, you’re still at work.” Meredith smirked. Izzie rolled her eyes at her friend’s pettiness.

“And it’s way past my bed time so come on, let’s go.” The blonde said brushing past Meredith and marching toward the parking lot.

“You should thank me. Had I not been late, you wouldn’t have gotten talking to McHottie.” Izzie spun around and threw her friend a death glare before strolling on. Meredith smirked with satisfaction. “Who knew she was a cyber geek like you anyway?” she said as she caught up with Izzie.

“Anyone can Facebook Mer, it’s a good way of keeping in touch with family and friends.”

“Clearly.”

“Just because you’re a technophobe Grey.”

“Hey I know how to turn on a computer.”

“Barely.” Izzie snarled.

“Err, hello, we use them at work all the time.”

“Standing over your intern’s shoulder shouting instructions on what to search for does not a computer user make.”

“Fine, whatever, I hate them. That doesn’t make me a bad person.”

“Never said it did. And just because I use one to communicate with friends does not make me a geek either.” The blonde said upon approaching the vehicle.

“Ok, ok, I get it, I’m sorry. I guess the truth hurts.” Meredith smiled moving to the passenger side of the car.

“Shut up Meredith.” Izzie laughed as she unlocked the car and moved to get in the driver’s side.

++

Izzie spent her days thinking of a certain redhead, it was almost impossible to get the former attending out of her thoughts. She would glance at her cell phone whenever she could, had a quick browse of her profile and a glimpse at Addison’s photo’s on her break.  She was enamoured by the older woman and strangely more so since Addison had left for LA. Previously she had been unobtainable, thwarting any chance the blonde may have had. But for all Izzie knew, Addison was straight.

Izzie sighed heavily as reality kicked in once again. She sat down for the umpteenth time and pulled her cell from her pocket, seeing she had received a text message, she opened it, expecting it to be her mother, or her cell phone carrier. She perked up a little upon seeing the message was indeed from Facebook. She scoffed at herself, this was becoming obsessive, oh who was she kidding, she was beyond obsessed and it was playing havoc with her life.

The blonde resident opened up the message, almost choking on the cookie she had just taken a bite from as she read the contents. Addison had apparently commented on one of Izzie’s photographs. ‘I love this photo, your smile lights up your whole face x’

“Woah.” Izzie said aloud to no one. “What the hell?” Izzie wracked her brain, trying to think which photograph it would be, only that wasn’t the only thing playing on her mind, it was the words Addison had written, about her, for all her friends to see. But maybe it was innocent, maybe it was just a nice photograph of the blonde.  But maybe it wasn’t. What did it mean? This constant questioning was driving the young doctor insane. She starred at the words before her, when a thought struck her. She opened up the browser on her cell phone and headed straight for her own photo albums.  The blonde found the photograph straight away, it was taken in the summer during a BBQ she, Meredith and George had held at the house. It was an upper body shot, she was wearing a white tank top, her hair was loose to her shoulder and her dark Oakley sunglasses sat on top of her head, pulling her blonde hair from her face. She was laughing at something someone had said, the sun had started to set and the orange glow enhanced her already beautiful features, there was a glint her eye as she was almost doubled over in laughter, leaning slightly towards the camera, an arm across her waist and she was holding a bottle of beer. Izzie sighed, it was a rather decent photograph.

Izzie’s hand hovered over the keypad, wondering whether it would be a good idea to reply to the comment, however she was unsure as to what she would say. She would have to think about it. She would have to pick her words carefully and besides, replying straight away would scream ‘desperate’. She didn’t want Addison to think she was stalking her own Facebook page for any signs of activity from the redhead.

“Oh boy.” Izzie said, depositing the phone back into her pocket. “I am in big trouble.” She sighed once again before rising from the table, ‘sure,’ she thought as she made her way back to work, ‘I’m even talking to myself.’

To be continued . . .
